Would this be nuts?

I kind of want to join a CSA. This weekend I was talking to Arnie about it and he said he's been a member of one for several years and that he absolutely tastes a difference in the quality. But he also said that it takes his wife about two hours to plan out how all the food will get used up and I should make sure I have that time because his wife has cried when she's had to throw out food (it would make me cry too).

So now I don't know. Kind of pressed for time these days. But it would be totally awesome on multiple levels.

I've been reading for a while but have rarely, perhaps never, commented.

First things first: thank you so much for sharing your life with your readers.

As for today's topic, I've been a CSA member for a few years and I totally love it. The quality of the food is usually amazing, plus it feels good to support a local business.

Yes, eating all the food can be a challenge, but here are my tips:

1. soup
2. roasted veggies
3. stir fry

Oh, and salad, of course. If you and your sisters and Josh all enjoy eating veggies, you'll be able to eat it all I'll bet. I don't find that it takes that much advance planning to figure out how to use everything if I fall back on the three items above. It can take a lot of time to wash/chop/prep all the food, but it's worth it.

Also, the CSAs often include a "recipe of the week" that is specifically designed to incorporate what you find in that week's box. Very helpful.

Enjoy! I love the way being a CSA member has helped me and my kids to eat more veggies and try things that I might not normally buy.

I probably should have something to say about the actual post, but I don't know what a CSA is.
Sorry about that.

I just wanted to tell you that I've been reading your blog but I never commented, and it's like reading about people in a story. You're an amazing writer! When I go on the computor I check your blog first, to see if there are any new posts. Good luck with everything, and thank you (:

Yes CSA! I agree with Arnie re: quality, and suspect you're more resourceful with making sure food gets used than his wife is. I'm with Snick--totally worth it.

You all already eat lots of produce and are used to preparing it, so there's probably little chance of waste. The predicted yields of shares can be found out in advance. You'd certainly be able to appreciate the quality! It would be a change, the planning after the acquiring, but only a change, not a huge obstacle. If any vegetables get a little too old, they can probably be used in soup. You can record here what you receive each week. We can give you ideas if you need them. If you happen to receive something none of you like at all, you can offer it to someone else.

A CSA sounds right up your alley. I've never seriously considered it because of the fear of having to throw stuff out, but I've only ever had myself to feed. You have four people and it sounds like you're already super-organized about planning your week's menus so that nothing gets wasted. I think it would be really worth it for you.
