I had the worst time tutoring today. These people send their kid to a school where she gets her homework all as one packet, for the whole week. They hired me to come on Tuesdays and plow through her entire packet in one night.
It sounds bad, but it's really not. It's less homework than if she got some each night. So tonight the mother walks me to the door and asks me what exactly I'm doing, because her first grader is NOT poised to skip second grade right now.
Me: You hired me to help her with her homework packet. This is the very first time you've ever said anything about wanting her to skip second grade.
Her: Well she won't, at this rate.
Me: Is that your goal for her?
Her: That should have been clear.
Me: I'm not sure why, since again, you never said a word about it in the past.
Her: You have failed. You aren't doing what we hired you to do.
We kind of went around in circles like that a few times. To be honest, the girl seems a little immature to me, so I don't think she could be skipped anyway. Plus, she's average. A nice, cute girl, but she's not super smart or anything. She also doesn't focus for very long. So no good school would skip her anyway.
It was just a really horrible night. I think the mother may wind up firing me.

That mom sounds kind of crazy.
