What I'm Wondering

Mama,

So all these super huge fat people are getting this gastric bypass surgery. There are shows built around it on tv - that's how popular it is. And you know, Aunt Elaine. So I decided to research it to see if it would be good for her, right?

Thing is, they go into your stomach, and take part of it out and make it smaller. So a smaller amount of food can fit in you after the surgery. Plus, apparently after surgery the body can't process the same foods, or something like that, so you totally have to eat healthily. So between eating healthy foods and less food altogether, that's how the people lose so much weight.

Okay but here's my question. If these people are fat because they couldn't control their eating habits before surgery, then why is it thought they'll be able to control their eating after surgery? Why don't they just get a nutritionist or whatever, and eat the way they'd had to if they DID have the surgery? Wouldn't they lose weight that way, even though maybe slower? Then they'd bypass all the potential complications of it, right?

I must be missing something. Maybe I should study more for my biology final.
Love,
Sam

sam,

you’re not mising anything. you’re absolutely right. lots of people are unable to control their eating habits even after surgery, which results in either bad health if they continue eating the wrong stuff or slowly stretching their stomach back to the old size if they continue to eat too much. for many overweight people the reduction of stomach size doesn’t work well because they have lost their natural feeling for when they are “full”. they have to learn again what it feels like to have eaten enough. i totally agree with you that people like that should consult a nutritionist and find back to healthy eating habits. that gastric bypass thing is just a hype.

Yeah- you get it. There has to be a) a commitment to losing weight and b) a complete change in lifestyle for this to work.

Healthy eating habits have to be a first step. As much as she might feel better about herself (and you) if she were in better shape, I fear she lacks the ability to commit to that type of regimen.

Many people who go for gastric bypass are folks looking for a quick fix. In a number of cases, they are slipping right back into their old ways.

PS- because you cannot hold or process a high volume of food, one of the side effects of overeating is hurling it all back up. THAT would be great, wouldn't it? Instant bulimia.
