I think I'm going to major in accounting. It seems like a good idea. I'll be able to get a job working right out of college. You can be an accountant anywhere. It pays well.
I want to minor in something fun and interesting, but useful and also something that has nothing to do with my major. Open to suggestions. It can be useful in making my brain a more interesting place for me to live. One of my teachers said that and I kind of thought it was brilliant. She said that the whole purpose of reading comic books or reading Vogue or whatever, is entertainment, and it is never frivolous to make your brain a more interesting place to be.
So I was sort of thinking about sociology because it seems fascinating that so many people can do life so many different ways and they can all get through life just fine. It might be interesting to find out about a bunch of the different groups and see exactly how they go about doing life.

I majored in psych and minored in sociology. If you get the wrong professor for soc, it's reallllly boring. Just a heads up.
I have an accounting degree, too, but I wish I had been smart enough to go for something fun as a minor. That's a great plan! I would have chosen something like art history, though.
Play to your strengths- are you more arty or mathsy? Talk to people who've taken that class before. Does Josh go to the same uni as you?
A 'sensible' major and a fun minor sounds like a great way to go. When I was in school, I'd pray for guidance before looking through the course offerings and then took the classes that jumped out at me and made me really excited. For your minor classes, take the two per semester that make you really excited when you read about them. Figure out your passions and go for it. (Definitely ask around to find out who the good teachers are. That makes a HUGE difference.)
You are an excellent writer, not only because of your writing skills and your ability to express feelings clearly and paint descriptions of situations, but also because you use your writing to comment on and observe social phenomena and interpersonal dynamics with keen insight. While one's first instinct might be to suggest writing as a minor for you because of your talent, with further thinking sociology comes to mind, to expand your knowledge of the topic of much of your writing.
So it's cool to continue reading and learn that in fact you are considering sociology. And, yes indeed, studying sociology might help answer some of the questions you have about people who live their lives under different circumstances. The way you phrase it is perfect.
You'd be really great at writing a social commentary kind of weekly column.
Accounting as a major and a career plan is smart planning and a good fit for you. Sociology as a minor would be a nice contrast to accounting and another good fit.
Please also consider taking some fun art and dance classes, allowing yourself a chance to revisit some pursuits you haven't had much chance to enjoy since childhood.
I think you have an excellent plan! Making your brain a cool place to live is a challenge especially as you get older I've found. I was a bio major, it was my passion, fun for me, but I didn't want to do it as a career, I minored in education, also not the career path I wanted. I took a lot of sociology and writing as electives. I'm an analyst for a hedge fund now. College taught me how to be inquisitive, how to do research, and how to manage my efforts to attain goals both short and long term. For me it was about not assuming what my career would be because of my major, maybe not the path for everyone but it worked for me. If I have any advice to give it would be to get the most out of each class you take, whether it's learning a process or a specific skill, find a way to use it to your advantage.
Good luck! No doubt you'll do great!
lots of love,
lil'sis
Anonymous offers great advice. I won't repeat it. I will say though that my favorite classes and the classes that help me in my career were the sociology classes that I took in school. Especially Organizational Theory. Furthermore, I think accounting is a great career plan. Everybody needs accountants, which means you can work anywhere. And that coupled with sociology gives you a very strong background for business management.
Good luck.
Michael
