Waves of anger

When Italians get angry they yell really loudly and then they're over it. It's like a sudden but intense rainstorm. My new shrink lady asked if my mother was a yeller. I can't think of her yelling. Her yelling was more to be heard over the shrieking of three little high-pitched girls. Or yelling at us to come home from down the street. There wasn't tons of screaming at us, but I think my mom missed knowing us in our most annoying ages.

My new shrink lady asked what makes me feel like I need to yell. I couldn't explain it - just sat there waving my hands around. So she gave me homework. Because I don't have enough to do. Write down each time I yell from this week to next, who I yell at, and why I yell at them.

I asked if this is going to help all the times I get furious but can't yell. Mistake. Now I also have to write down each of those times too. It made me angry and I considered yelling at the new shrink lady but the irony of it made me giggle instead.

I may start doing just the same. I hope it helps.

Its true---I married into an Italian family and they yell all the time. Its actually kind of good--they yell and then its over and they move on. Unlike my family that seethes in silence for weeks.

Brilliant homework. Self awareness is the first step to making positive changes. If you don't know what's triggering your anger you can't possibly be prepared for it when it happens. When you have that self-awareness, you should be able to see a potential problem coming and get prepared so you don't lose control.
