So this birth control Seasonique gives you your period four times a year. They advertise as saying that there's no health benefit to getting a period. My question is, if that's the case then why give it four times a year? Why give it at all?
This is why if you are a mother you should not be allowed to die. Because your children have questions like these!

I'm no medical professional, but I have a hormone disorder that means I don't usually get a period on my own. I take pills every there months (progesterone) so as to have a period. My doctor said that not having a period at a minimum, every three months - leads to the lining of the uterus continuing to build up - and if you don't clear it out regularly, it becomes a health risk for cervical cancer, uterine cancer etc.
So I call bullshit on "there's no health benefit to having a period," and medications that intend to suppress what is a necessary, if not exactly enjoyable function. The body does what it does for a reason. I'd be happy if mine would do what it's supposed to without medication.
Another thing those ads won't tell you - when you only have a period every three or four months or something, it SUCKS. It's heavy and generally it hurts like hell, severe cramping, etc. It's not really something I'd consider a "benefit," except possibly that I can choose exactly when I want it to be by timing the pills.
I went and found this article about when a similar pill was approved in Canada: http://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=3&ved=0CBcQFjAC&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.canada.com%2Ftopics%2Fbodyandhealth%2Fsexualhealth%2Fstory.html%3Fid%3Daf6f4a7b-fc74-4433-816d-7fc5862745da%26k%3D10868&ei=QArPS_L9H5DasgP1l_GuDg&usg=AFQjCNF9czUcd_I2cH8Iy2LtZ1U_toKj-Q&sig2=qeTiEyHugsQVyHPq3mwuCg
So you can read for yourself! Some doctors seem to think it's fine, there's at least one dissenting view in there. I see now how taking the pill and only having a period at that time is different from not having one otherwise.
I'm on the Pill and have been for yrs and yrs. Occasionally, I'll not take a break from the pack (the 7-days you're meant to not take The Pill) if I want to avoid my period. That's been a handy option when I'm just not in the mood to bleed or deal with PMS. And I use a Diva Cup which I can put in just before my period starts, so the whole shebang is easier to deal with. In fact, if you and your sisters were interested, I would absolutely buy DivaCups for the three of you. Saves a small fortune on tampons and pads. I don't work for the company, really!
I just discovered your blog today and I'm astounded at your strength and wit.
