I guess the bike messenger girl got in trouble because she showed up today and was much more ... meek. When she showed up I was on the phone so couldn't really talk to her but she was very deliberately gentle in putting down packages and made sure she had everything we needed to send out. Before she turned around to leave she smiled very hesitantly at me. I did not smile back.
Josh started his job working for his dad. He has to dress up and arrive on time and everything. This morning he was in a total frenzy and my sisters and I sat there watching him run all around trying to get out of the house on time.
Today when I got home it was before Josh, and when he walked in the door he flopped on the couch totally exhausted. It's over 100 degrees this week, and feels even hotter with so many people squeezed into such a tiny city; we're expecting blackouts to come. I spent at least 20 minutes listening to Josh whine about how tired he was, how hot it was, how all day he kept being told to do things, how unfair it is that girls can wear dresses and guys can't unless they work for Kelly Cutrone.
When he stopped complaining, I told him to go make dinner for the four of us and be thankful he didn't have three to five hours of homework to do after that. Josh's eyes got very wide and in a small voice he said, "So I should suck it up?" Yes. Yes you should. Then I walked away and made dinner for the four of us because it was clear Josh might have stood in the kitchen and cried if I'd pushed it.

GREAT reaction. I love that you drove home the point but then were loving enough to make dinner for him. Very funny.
