- at dinner we talked about getting a dog. the two things I'm worried about are having the time to train it really well, and however much it would cost with vet bills and stuff. oh and plus not having enough time to play with it. wait and also, if Josh and I break up, who would the dog belong to?
- it's totally ridiculous but I am still on the hunt for a dress. maybe once a week or something i'll look around at a few sites (if it's too many i get overwhelmed). i finally found a dress I like! too bad it was $495. that is not a typo.
- there must be something in the air. i have had a headache all day but it turns out a lot of other people have too. so at least we are not alone.
- dinner was tomato soup and grilled cheese, with green beans. it was a beautifully colorful dinner.
- my new favorite place to get bagels is Ess-a-Bagel.
- someone asked if i recommend living in the city or if it is too much for someone who's from out in the middle of nowhere. this is an impossible question to answer. maybe they absolutely love cows and feel crowded in malls. if they're that kind of person then NY is not for them. if they are gay and feel completely alone, or super artsy and need creative stimulation then NY may be for them. if they are the type who looks like a target, can't fight, and are afraid of their own shadow then NY is probably not for them. if they have one iota of street smarts then even if they get mugged they'll probably bounce back from it.
some people really love it here, and they get everything that's great about it. they love cab drivers who drive crazy, and understand that when you are on the train you push people with your body but never with your hands. other people really WANT the lady at the post office to ask where they're going when they get a passport, and for the checkout guy at the supermarket to ask if they're having a party when they buy a bag of chips.

Yay for getting a dog! Just a suggestion, you might think about adopting an older pet from a shelter...they are usually house broken and somewhat trained...also their personalities are developed so you'll be able to tell if he or she is a fit for your family.Plus they are oh so thankful for another chance at having a family!
Good luck!

Jessica an old dog is not a good idea for Sam. She's never had a dog before, and older dogs generally require more vet care. If she's worried about the money it would be better for her to get a dog on the younger side that's got a better shot of staying healthy longer, not one that will live for two years and be shitting all over the house all the time and costing thousands in vet bills.
As scroogey as it sounds, I'm going to suggest that you don't get a dog right now. You are all super busy and dogs require a big time commitment--especially when they're puppies. Plus, they can be very expensive. Our border collie mixed it up with a porcupine twice this summer. It cost us almost $600 to have the quills removed. We've never paid to have that done before, but there were a *ton* of quills and he wouldn't let us near him to get them out. My cousin's dog ate a bunch of rocks and after surgery, was on a strict boiled hamburger and rice diet for six or eight weeks. That got expensive, too.
You could volunteer at a shelter or go visit pet stores to get your puppy fix (that's what we do). There will be a time, probably in the not-too-distant future, when a dog will make perfect sense for you. I just don't think that time is right now. :(
As a lover of pets and owner of two dogs, I second the vote to not get a dog. Dogs require a lot of time and money. On the time front, I know that I enjoyed my dogs significantly more before I had a child and my time became more precious. Considering how busy it sounds like you are, it's something to take into account.
Regarding cost, even if you get a young dog, that does not guarantee you'll be free of expensive vet bills. We had to spend over $4,000 to have surgery on one dog when she was just a few years old - and she's actually a super healthy dog - she just got injured.
BTW, I love your blog and admire your candor and thoughtfulness. I'm more than a little impressed with you.
A cat is cheaper and a lot less of a time commitment than a dog. I never realized just HOW much work a dog requires... or how destructive a puppy can be, even when well-exercised. Or for even less work than a cat, I'd recommend something in a cage... a bunny, a guinea pig, etc. I wouldn't think a dog is a good idea with your schedule. Each vet bill cost us $60-100 to get the first round of shots... I hate to think what it might be if she really got sick!

I agree with a lot of the posters. Do not get a dog unless you have the time and the money. All animals get sick and they need yearly shots.
I'm the one who asked about my niece coming to NYC for college. Personally, I love NYC more than anyplace, and we visit as often as we can. My niece spent a semester in Brooklyn and came into the city once a week for an internship at the UN and also tutored refugees from the mid-east. She's pretty confident about getting around in the city. I just wonder if she'll have the true "college experience" in such an urban setting. I went to a Big Ten university with all the football games and the big classes and a beautiful campus. Oh, well, she'll make her own decision....
My vote: No dog until someone has time to be with her/him for companionship and training. Money is important, too. I laughed at your descriptions of who might and might not love living in NYC.
I know I would love it for about 6 months a year. I need both city and space to feel balanced. The problem with cats is the constant need for cleaning or the place smells like a zoo. With four very active people in the household, maybe holding off on a pet would be a good idea. But what do I know?
