Florida: day 381

In case it's not obvious, I'm kinda finished with the whole Disney extravaganza. In the morning we went to the Magic Kingdom. It was very Disney-ish. We left after less than three hours. Here's what I don't get: why are the parents always getting their kids all riled up but then complaining about their behavior? So many mothers are there screeching at their kids, "Destiney! DESTINEY! LOOK! It's GOOFY! SAY HI TO GOOOOOFY!" We watched a lot of parents do this so much that it made their kids cry. Aren't they bringing them there to have fun? Maybe the kid doesn't give a shit about Goofy. If I ever have kids and talk to them that way, in that screechy, sing-song voice, I want someone to slap me.

The other nutty thing was there'd be a kid wearing Mickey Mouse sneakers, a Disney shirt, Mickey ears, holding a Mickey blanket in one hand and eating a Mickey ice cream in the other, but crying and screaming because they wanted yet another Mickey thing. I mean, at some point, isn't enough enough? Whatever, they're little kids - maybe they don't know better yet. The part that's truly nutty is the parents would get the kid whatever they were screaming for. Josh and I watched this over and over - kid wants something, kid screams and cries for it, parents offer up whatever they can in order to shut the kid up. If I'd ever tried to pull that shit, my mother would have smacked me into next week.

Anyway we looked into going to the ESPN World of Sports thing, but I had no interest and Josh didn't think it looked fun enough to be worth it. We wound up going to Mandara Spa and got pedicures, although Josh stopped before the nail polish portion of it. Then we got massages, and I almost fell asleep from the scalp massage portion. I kept my underwear on, because it felt awkward not to. I wonder what the people giving the massages think when the people won't get all the way naked.

Later we went to the pools and just played around there for a couple of hours before dinner. It was a lot of fun. We agreed that we're both all Disney-ed out. Josh asked if I wanted to go to the Kennedy Space Center, and explained what it is. The shitty thing about going on a vacation without a real grownup is that we can't rent a car. Josh called a car service and they're picking us up in about an hour. We're going to get to meet a real astronaut and have lunch with them - not a person playing the part of one, but one who really went to space. Danielle is going to be so outrageously jealous. I'm almost afraid to tell her.

After that we're going kayaking in Cocoa Beach. There are these swamps in Florida, and you can take an airboat through them to see all the wildlife, but Josh researched it and found out the noise is upsetting to the animals so we don't want to do that. So we're going to kayak instead. It doesn't look too hard. Today is going to be so much fun; I'm really excited.

Those first 2 paragraphs you wrote are more than enough proof that you would be an awesome parent.

OMG, my daughter's name is Destiny and we're at Disney this week and I took her picture with Goofy yesterday!

OK, just kidding. But I must say, Sam, you might be making mothers who read your blog feel a little self-conscious right now.

Glad you're moving on to some fun activities today. Enjoy.

Anon, it seems like YOU are the one feeling a little self-conscious now. Sam did nothing wrong by quietly observing how parents interacted with their children. Maybe you need to take a second look at how much you give your daughter and how you react to her when she throws a fit to get things.

Sam, I applaud you for realizing that the behavior you witnessed is neither appropriate nor 100% the fault of the over-indulged kids. I know I'm old (my kids are grown) but I cannot imagine either getting them all hyped up or buying them everything in sight. Who has fun with that?

Continue enjoying your time. The away-from-Disney day sounds great.
