Sundays with Alex

(That was supposed to come across like Tuesdays with Morrie.) Alex said she wanted to do something we hadn't done in a long time. We kind of do the same things ALL the time, so I wasn't sure what she was going to come up with. Turned out, neither did she because that's as far as her thought process went.

Yesterday morning Al woke me up claiming she finally had a plan. Firstly, she wanted to eat all our meals out. I stopped her there. We had time to spend together just the two of us. We didn't have time to spend together the two of us plus a thousand dollars. She amended it to going out to a fancy dinner. Fine. We agreed to split the day over Saturday and Sunday because I had to work Saturday morning and we had fire family dinner tonight.

So that meant that after work I raced home, changed and we went swimming at the beach. I don't know why we don't do this more often, it was outrageously fun. We stayed until the sun went down and we were almost cold. Then we hauled ass back into the city, and went to Bareburger for dinner. We got one root beer and one milkshake and split both with our food. It was fun - Alex has turned into a whole little person.

This morning we made fruit salad and french toast, then went over to Chelsea Piers. Alex wanted to go bowling. Before today I couldn't even remember the last time I went bowling. To be honest, we kind of sucked. Well, I'm not really positive we sucked. But I'm pretty sure your bowling ball is not supposed to go into the lane next to you.

Then we went ice skating - it was like the first time I ever did that when it was hot out. Skating burns a lot of calories so when Al and I got off the ice we were starving and got pizza before going to dinner. We ate two dinners. It was a really expensive, but really fun weekend.

Next weekend is either going to be a free weekend or Alex is paying.

You continue to build memories with both of your sisters all the time. It's so wonderful, Sam, and so important for all of you. I've probably mentioned this before, but my 2 sisters and I are less than 4 years apart-we are 60,59, and 57. We are still incredibly close and have the best time in each others' company. I'm so happy you, Dani, and Alex have each other.

Oh, and by the way...I definitely got the "Tuesdays with Morrie" reference. No need to explain.

Glad you had a fun weekend with Alex - I think it must be nice to spend time with her alone for a change even though you both must miss Dani a lot. I wish things were cheaper - Its hard to do things without spending money nowadays though not sure why - i took my sisters to see Harry Potter yesterday - iv taken them to every single one so its was a bitter sweet moment for us. - The older one is off to varsity to start her 'new' life next year! Anyway - hope you have a great week.

The past few entries have really made me think of a description I heard once, which was that in the military, the best officers make the people under them feel safe enough to be brave. I hope I don't sound like a total cheeseball when I say this, but it really seems like, between Dani going abroad and Alex planning activities and trying new things at home, you have made your sisters feel safe enough in your family to be brave. What a great gift.
