The illusive Friday dress

Getting a new Friday dress did seem like a good idea. Because I really do want to cry every time I have to put on my faded one. I really just wish it hadn't faded, because it's so pretty. I don't know what else I could have done to save it though - I turned it inside out, washed it in cold water either in the sink or on a gentle cycle.

Here is the list of places I've looked:
1. Gap
2. Old Navy
3. Banana Republic
4. JCrew
5. Macy's
6. Bloomingdales
7. Nordstrom
8. Marshalls
9. American Eagle
10. Aeropostale
11. Betsey Johnson

Now I did find TWO really great dresses in Gap Kids. But, I don't think even their biggest size will fit me in a dress. Not in a way that's okay for work. Oh, and I only want to spend like $20 - $35. Maybe $40. Maybe this is part of my problem? I don't know, but I spent an outrageous amount of time surfing the web today at work looking at clothing.

I thought about H&M but don't really want to shop there. But maybe having princples is overrated and it's less important than having one good dress? I don't know. Will have to think about it while I check out Kohls and Forever 21.

Have you tried Kohl's or TJ Maxx? Not sure if they have those where you are, but they're like Marshall's in that they have nice stuff that's marked down. Maybe try eBay?

Forever 21, H&M, Target.

Such a shame about the faded dress.

Where did it and your other dresses come from?

Maybe actually go shopping, go to the actual stores?

Maybe go to an inexpensive funky Village shop?

Maybe you'd like to sew something?

Good point about H&M. Good question about principles.

Can skirts work? This skirt seems nice, and with this discount, it would be only $15. But then there's shipping, and shipping back if necessary. Still, you'd probably have $15 to $20 left for a new top to go with it.

Do you have a photo of the current Friday dress?

You might have better luck at small, independent neighborhood shops. Maybe look for some when you visit Brooklyn?

This black dress is what I have: http://cgi.ebay.com/GAP-Girls-2-Summer-Sun-Dresses-Yellow-Brown-NWT-size-4T-/380252099685?pt=US_Childrens_Clothing_Girls

It's kind of inappropriately short on me which is why I wear it with leggings.

I think I just can't shop in girls clothes anymore. The problem is women's clothes look ridiculous to me - like they should be worn by a middle-aged midwestern woman who routinely wears holiday sweater vests without irony.

Check the Junior clothes vs. the Women's? NYC has to have some fantastic resale/thrift stores. It takes more time to look, but I bet you could find something great. For $50 you could get a few outfits.

Wet Seal, Go Jane, Dehlia's.

Found these work dresses after searching a bunch more for you. They are all on sale and range in price from $19 to $79 with many within your budget. Some seem very nice, including the $19 one! Hadn't heard of the company before, but it seems to have a good reputation? You might want to check it out more before ordering.

Anon with the link, my guess is Sam will be looking for a dress that's geared towards younger people. Newport News and the Lands End skirt are more geared towards older ladies.

Thanks for the link to what your dress looks like!

It's good to see so to understand what type of dress it is that you wear to work. Didn't know that was the type of dress! Now more appropriate suggestions can be made.

Thanks also to the previous Anonymous. Still, maybe one of the linked ones will work? Sounds like Sam might want something a little longer, as she's been talking about being aware of dresses being too short or otherwise inappropriate.

Anyway, what a nice dress yours is. Very sad situation. That new one being sold over on eBay wouldn't happen to be your size?

How about this one? Is this more appropriate? It's $30, though a final sale.

Looked again at the Newport News dresses, this time not ignoring the ones without sleeves. Not all of them look like they are only for older ladies.

Maybe you will indeed have better luck at the stores for younger people as the other Anonymous indicates, places that have adult sizes in youthful fashions. Forever 21 is one of those? Does Delia's have adult sizes?

But this $25 dress from that Newport News site, for example, seems youthful. Perhaps it is too plain?

Just trying to get an idea and give some suggestions. There do seem to be a few on that site that seem like they might be your taste. Maybe you can point us to photos of some of your other dresses? Can you describe what it is you are looking for that you weren't able to find at any ofthe sites you listed, or what it was you didn't like about what you found there?

Did a search that Google recommended. Wet Seal and Delia's, mentioned by one of the other Anonymouses, came up. Kohl's, mentioned by both Catherine and you, came up too. So it seems we are on the right track for youthful clothing in adult sizes, Junior's as opposed to Women's (or Misses'), as OTRgirl says.

Wet Seal has an impressive variety of nice dresses, all definitely within your budget. And shipping is free with a minimum order of only $15.

Delia's has different categories of cute dresses, or you can see them all. Some are the right price. Lots of florals, like the dress you are trying to replace! There are also some on Clearance, (but the first one shown isn't?).

A site called Charlotte Russe has a few dresses to wear to work. Not sure about all them. Maybe the first one? Good price, and looks like you can get 10% off. Or look at all the dresses there.

A place called Vanity has dresses that don't look quite as good in quality. There's some sort of buy one dress get one at 50% off deal, and there is Clearance. Prices look okay, with some of the Clearance really cheap. The site uses the term "Women's" but it's clearly for young people.

And Kohl's has dresses here.

Looked more at the page of all the Charlotte Russe dresses. Some really nice ones, all within your budget, a few with deep discounts. No need to limit what you look at there to the few the site labels "wear to work"; some of these are the type it seems you'd wear to work. Not that this is necessarily better than the selection at the other sites, just realizing didn't provide any of this information with that link in the previous comment. Now it's ten times longer here than it would have been if included in the first place.

This one appears to be similar in shape as the one you are looking to replace, and it is also floral, though a completely different kind of floral. $26.
