This is a stupid one. There are TONS of things I never get compliments on, because they don't apply! Nobody ever tells me how beautiful my manicure is, but that's probably because I never get manicures. Nobody ever compliments my driving, but I don't know how to drive. We could go on like this forever.
You know what though? When I went upstate a couple of weekends ago at one point I thought, "This is the type of place that would have best apple pie contests." Usually the people who like to cook seem to imply that they're good at cooking. I have no idea if I'm good at cooking. We could stereotype and say because of my Italianness that I must be, but there have got to be some old Italian grandmothers out there who can't make gravy to save their lives.
Sometimes my sisters take out cookbooks from the library and I read recipes before bed. It's fun to try new foods and see if I can come up with things we haven't had before. Nobody's ever gotten sick from eating anything I've cooked. But nobody ever really compliments what I make either. Maybe I need to invite people over and cook for them. I wonder how many people you have to invite over before one of them says out loud if they like what you fed them. I hope it's not like in sales where you have to get told "no" 99 times before you get to the hundreth person who will say "yes." If it is, I'm screwed, because it'll take me like at least ten years to get that many people over to eat dinner.
When I was in middle school there was a girl who was really unpopular and every once in a while she would bring cookies or munchkins or something to school to pass out to the popular kids. Everyone thought she was lame, even though they'd eat her food. Wonder if it speaks to how desperate I am that I considered bringing food to school just to see if I get compliments on it. It probably does, it won't happen.

I am reading your blog from start to current and I love it. I've made it to Feb 2009 and I think I will be sad to get caught up because then there won't be so much new Sam stuff to read every day. I gave you a shout out on my blog and thought you might like to know when people are saying nice things about you. Keep writing!

Take care,

If you cook for your family a lot (which it seems like you do) and everybody eats your food without complaint, that probably means you're a good cook. Until you have to cook for picky toddlers.
You should ask Josh. :)
As for compliments - guests are good for that. But you can't trust their compliments because it's good manners to find something nice to say about the food even if it's just okay (or even bad).
i think just the fact that your adventurous in your cooking and your sisters dont seem to be against you trying out new stuff - that means that your a good cook. If you wernt then they would try make you not try new stuff. I dont know if youve wonderered upon the smitten kitchen site - she makes some lovely stuff (not that I can cook most of it but maybe one day) Today I see she has some apple recipes and I thought due to your post maybe youd like to check it out....http://smittenkitchen.com/2010/10/spiced-applesauce-cake/
Definitely 1)ask Josh and 2)invite people over. And no, you don't need to do the 99-1 thing.
That's very interesting. You always have come across as a good cook, but it never occurred to me to wonder whether your food actually tastes good. Guess I just assumed it did.
I've been saying for like the past year that you ought to invite people over more regularly. You're making dinner for your family anyway, so it's an easy way to be social, no need to be fancy, and college kids away from home will especially appreciate it. So now you have another reason!
If you meet people you might want to be friends with, just invite them to join you for dinner! Easy easy, no big commitment.
I like to be thought of as a good cook. I think it's a natural thing to want.
I came across your blog today, and I really like it. I love the way you say things how they are, no euphemisms required. I have showed your blog to plenty of people, and they really like it too. good job and keep writing.
