Fuck rocks

Somebody at Dani's school gave her information and application for some school that's half high school, half college. It's not in New York though. They got her all excited about it, telling Dani they thought she could get admitted and how she should hurry to get her application in because the deadline is in a month. So of course Dani came home all pumped up ready to tell me all about how great it would be that she'd graduate from college a year younger and how she'd live with all these people and everything.

But what nobody bothered to tell her is that it's over $50,000 a year. And that the biggest scholarships they give out are to people who aren't white. They say that right on their website. Students of color. Nobody told Danielle that each semester is a 10-week one, with a two week break in the middle when students are supposed to come home. There are no scholarships for flights on airplanes to get home. Nobody told Danielle that it's out in the middle of the woods, where she wouldn't be able to have a job like she does now. Maybe if she were lucky she'd get some bullshit work-study job in an office that pays minimum wage, that has no benefits. It wouldn't be a job that has benefits for the three of us, that pays more than minimum wage.

No. They just told her all the good things, and left out all the actual issues that would make it so she can't go there. Like that there's an application fee. I hate how scholarships are only for a year. I wish they were for the full four years of college, so you knew you could count on them as long as you maintained a good GPA.

So no. Danielle will not be applying, and in the future please do not point her towards schools that cost money, that are far, far away from home. Fuck Simon's rocks.

I've never heard of Simon's Rock. Everyone knows Bronx Science. Dani will get into a better college and get more scholarships if she stays put. She is also probably getting a better high school education where she is. She can look into local summer programs for taking college courses and funding thereof. And her AP credits will count towards college. Anyway, why would she want only three years of college if she likes learning so much?

I actually went to Simon's Rock. It is a great school, but it is a very different environment and not exactly ideal. I transferred out after a year to go to a different college. She would be better off finishing high school traditionally and being more eligible for scholarships at traditional colleges.
